V-League 2026-2027: New rules, more foreigners, fierce title race ahead

The 2026-2027 V-League season officially kicks off with major changes in playing rules and foreign player regulations, promising a more attractive and professional competition. Công an Hà Nội (CAHN) is considered the top contender thanks to strong investment, but the title race will be fierce with Thể Công, Hà Nội FC, Ninh Bình and Nam Định also in the mix. From the very first days of the season, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has implemented IFAB rule adjustments aimed at increasing live ball time and reducing time-wasting. Specifically, throw-ins and goal kicks must be taken within 5 seconds; substitutions are limited to 10 seconds; and injury stoppages are capped at 1 minute. These changes are expected to raise match tempo, improve attractiveness and professionalism. According to experts, average live ball time could increase by 10 to 15% – a significant step forward compared to previous seasons. In addition, foreign player quotas have been relaxed. Clubs are allowed to register up to 4 foreigners and use 4 foreign players simultaneously on the pitch (instead of 3). Teams participating in continental competitions (AFC Champions League, AFC Cup) are allowed up to 7 registered foreigners with 4 on the pitch. This gives a major advantage to financially strong clubs like CAHN, which has recruited a host of quality players: Fran Putros, David Henen, Perea, Sabater, Pham Ba, Leygley under coach Mano Polking. These additions give CAHN a balanced and deep squad, ready to compete in both V-League and AFC Champions League. However, CAHN is not the only ambitious club. Thể Công under coach Velizar Popov has also strengthened with new signings Doãn Ngọc Tân, Triệu Việt Hưng, Gordon and Ribamar. Hà Nội FC, Ninh Bình and Nam Định are all well-prepared, promising one of the most exciting title races in league history. In contrast, newcomers Đồng Nai and Bắc Ninh face huge challenges. Thin squads, lack of experience and limited budgets make them strong relegation candidates. The opening match between Đồng Nai and Thể Công at Đồng Xoài Stadium will be the first test of the new team's ability to adapt to the tough V-League environment. Football expert Đoàn Minh Xương commented: 'With new rules and more foreigners, V-League will become more attractive, attract spectators and help the national team. Vietnamese players have the chance to play alongside quality foreigners, thereby improving their level.' He also emphasized that the league's goal is to become an 'international playground, national festival' – an ambitious message. However, not everything is rosy. The risk of wage inflation due to the foreign player race is real, especially for clubs with moderate financial resources. The consistent enforcement of new rules by referees is also a challenge. If not implemented uniformly, these changes could backfire, reducing fan confidence. On the sporting side, CAHN leads in preparation. Their recent success in the AFC Champions League (advancing past the group stage) is a huge mental boost. However, a packed schedule in both continental and domestic competitions may overload key players. Quang Hải, Văn Hậu and other stars will need to maintain consistent fitness if CAHN wants to finish on top. On the other hand, teams like Thanh Hóa and HAGL, though not title contenders, can still spring surprises with disciplined play. They will play the role of 'spoilers' in both the relegation battle and mid-table fights. Overall, the 2026-2027 season promises a minor revolution for Vietnamese football. New rules, more foreigners, and systematic investment from top clubs will create a more attractive, dramatic and professional V-League.
