U23 Vietnam and the lesson from defeat: When tactics are not enough to win

After a 1-2 loss to U23 Thailand in the semifinals of the 2026 ASEAN U23 Championship, many fans questioned whether U23 Vietnam was truly weaker. Looking at possession stats, Vietnam held 62% and took 14 shots to Thailand's 8. But football is not just numbers. The problem lies in how we used that control. Coach Kim Sang-sik deployed a 4-3-3 with fast wingers, but the midfield lacked rhythm under high pressing. Central midfielder Nguyen Thai Son's pass accuracy dropped from 85% to 58% under pressure from three Thai players. This was a tactical blind spot. In the first half, Vietnam completed 7 vertical passes through midfield; in the second half only 2 as Thailand pressed harder. The defense also left gaps behind full-backs. The second goal came when center-back Bui Tien Dung was pulled wide, leaving space for a Thai striker to head home. Left winger Pham Van Huu delivered 11 crosses but only 2 reached teammates. He was a 'false number 10' - wearing the No.10 shirt but making no difference. In contrast, defensive midfielder Le Khac Ngoc Hoang made 8 recoveries, 4 successful tackles, and 3 long passes that created chances. He is the silent hero who needs no goals to be remembered. The lesson is clear: tactics alone are not enough without flexibility and game reading. U23 Vietnam must rethink its system, not blame individuals. I have followed Vietnamese football for over 15 years, from the Calisto era to today, and never seen a generation so technically gifted yet so tactically fragile. Reform must start at club level: focus on developing players' ability to handle pressure. Otherwise, all youth trophies are illusions. I assert: if this style continues, U23 Vietnam will not compete at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup. They need a tactical revolution, not just possession obsession. Football has its own laws: the humble hold the key, the loud hold the ticket. Give the keys to the silent workers like Le Khac Ngoc Hoang. That is the only way forward.
