FUKUOKA, JAPAN - India earned their first win at the 2026 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship by beating New Zealand 25-22, 25-18, 25-21, but the celebration is muted because their quarterfinal hopes rest on a match they do not play. Volleyball World reported that India finished third in Pool B with a 1-2 record. Their fate will be decided by the Pool A meeting between Oman and Bahrain. If Oman win by three points, they leapfrog India. If Bahrain win 3-0, the two teams are separated by point ratio. Any other result sends India into the last eight. Captain Jerome Vinith Charles scored 19 points, Chirag Yadav chipped in 14 with three aces and a block, and Amit Balwan Singh added 13 points and two blocks for India. New Zealand ended their campaign despite 15 points from Seth Dylan Grant, 13 from John McManaway and 12 from Mana Placid. Meanwhile, Japan closed Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record by beating Australia 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 in front of about 6,500 spectators in Kitakyushu. Yuji Nishida posted 16 points on an 82% attack success rate. Ran Takahashi had 13 points with five aces and a 70% kill rate. Australia finished second at 2-1 after William D'Arcy-Miles scored 13 and Lorenzo Pope 11. South Korea swept Qatar 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 to finish Pool C with seven points. Jaeyoung Lim scored 15 for Korea, while Qatar's Mubarak Musa Thiik Madut scored 17 points in a losing cause. The 2026 event doubles as a qualifier for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and a gateway to the 2027 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Cup. The contest between Oman and Bahrain therefore carries more weight than its star power suggests. India have done their job on the court; the last page of the group stage will now be written by two other teams.
