11.8 Kilometres a Match and a Name Struck Off the List

On 14 November 2026, the corridor of the Superliga club's training ground felt colder than usual. I stood in front of the squad list pinned to the board and read it twice, top to bottom. His name was gone. Four months earlier, I had typed that name into the report I sent to the board, with two lines of numbers I believed would convince any room: 11.8 kilometres covered per match, 6.2 ball recoveries. A veteran scout, a man I still address with respect, said one sentence in that meeting: the boy will struggle to settle. I wrote it in my notebook and still put my full trust in my model. The board answered me with silence.

In July 2026, as the Nordic transfer window opened, this club was looking for a defensive midfielder to plug the gap in front of a back four. Their budget did not stretch to a proven European name. I handed over three candidates from Senegalese and Ivorian league data. He topped the list. A three-year contract was signed, the fee around 1.2 million euros plus appearance-related add-ons — a serious investment for a club with a modest wage bill. In my report I described him as a midfielder who sweeps horizontally, reads situations quickly, and has the engine for the Superliga tempo. I even calculated his adaptation time: six weeks.

By week nine, the coaching staff called me up to the analysis room.

The data

While he was still in Senegal, my model scored him very highly. Per match he covered 11.8 kilometres, made 6.2 recoveries, won 58 percent of his duels and played 6.6 progressive passes per 90 minutes. Those three indicators describe a modern holding midfielder: wide coverage, ball-winning, and the ability to move play across the halfway line.

I watched nine of his matches in Denmark in person, from the stands, taking notes on every phase, and that is where I realised my model had left out one variable. With him on the pitch, the team's PPDA rose from 8.9 to 10.4. In other words, the team pressed less intensely. His recoveries per 90 fell to 4.1. His progressive passes dropped to 3.5. He still ran, still chased, still contested — but that energy was released at the wrong moment.

My model measured a player's energy. It did not measure the moment that energy was released.

In Senegalese football, teams switch states constantly, pressing in discrete bursts, and a midfielder with a big engine will harvest the ball anywhere. In the Superliga the game runs to a different rhythm: the team controls the ball, waits for the opponent to step up, then triggers the press on a specific cue — a square pass towards a wide centre-back, a touch that turns the ball towards the touchline. The starting position decides everything. Standing five metres off the meeting point, he ran two extra kilometres a match and still never touched the ball.

Numbers only narrate the past; football lives in the future.

The counter-argument

The easiest reading is that the model was wrong. I do not think so. The model answered the question I asked correctly; the problem was that I asked the wrong question. I asked how much this player runs, instead of asking where this system needs the energy placed. It also has to be said: in mid-September the coaching staff changed shape from a high press to a mid-block, and his role was pushed two metres deeper than the original plan. Part of my data came from a context that no longer existed.

Then there are the things that never entered the model: the dressing room, the language, the meals. The club only arranged an interpreter from week nine. By then he had learned how to run, but not how to speak.

PPDA cannot measure the heart, but it points to where the heart is beating.

What troubles me is the warning from that veteran scout. He had no model, no spreadsheet, only twenty years of watching young players. I do not believe in luck; I believe in what luck conceals. And what was concealed, this time, sat outside the reach of every indicator I had.

What comes next

In the next transfer window, I will add one column to the spreadsheet: the number of weeks a player needs to understand his teammates' pressing cues, estimated from shared sessions and interpreted sessions. If the club decides to loan him out in the winter window, the single signal worth tracking is the share of forward passes played in the first thirty metres after winning the ball. That indicator tells you whether a player was already standing in the right place before the ball arrived.

For me, the lesson of 14 November is not that a name was struck off. Football always works that way. The lesson is that I read the data and forgot to read the person, and I am still not certain I am reading him correctly now.
